Is it an insecurity? Is it because they wanna look like white western women? When I see programs about Africa, none of the black women there straighten their hair and they look naturally more attractive then black women here that straighten their hair and put tonnes of chemical gunk in there.

I'm not sure. You might be on to something though...I straighten my hair from time to time. Not all the time because then it will damage my hair. It is a bit easier to manage when it is straightened but I like my natural un permed hair. It's not very common where I live. Everyone seems to have their hair permed. But my mom won't let me put all those destroying chemicals in it anyways.

Well, I'm not black but I will venture a guess. I think they can do more with their hair (different styles) if it's straight. I see far too many black women with wigs on which to me looks very hot and uncomfortable also very fake. Many have their hair natural but add extensions which last for a long time but they tell me when it's first done, it's too tight and painful along with it being itchy. I've see beautiful natural styles when the cut is great but usually natural black hair looks woolly, bushy and dull.

Natural black hair is beautiful, but it is very hard to manage and taime, so some smart person came up with a relaxer to make African-American hair more manageable. It's not insecurity or the want to be white. It's just another one of the million hair styles African American hair can hold. Relaxed hair is nothing like caucasion hair.

We are not trying to look like white western women. When you apply for a job they judge you by appearance, and nappy hairstyles does not work.
It is also better to have straighten hair for me because less breakage. You only have a few nappy styles, and hundreds of straight styles.
When dress in formals the nappy looks does not go with a formal outfit.
The women from Africa can't afford to get their hair done or that products are not sold there.
We all are not originally from the Mother Country. Remember when they brought the Africans over to be slaves a lot of the masters raped the women and produced mix babies. So none of the American Blacks are not all 100% African.

because they feel as though it's more manageable, you can do more with it, and it's better for the corporate world...even though all these are false, that's what they believe.
-natural hair is more manageable because you do not have to do that much with it to keep up your hairstyles
-natural hair is more versatile because you can wear natural hairstyles or straighten it to wear straight hairstyles
-if your hair is healthy, it can be very presentable in the corporate world
