The first type average-priced treatment is the regular straightening that is achieved with an alkaline relaxer. It work on African American hair best and straight results can be obtained without heat styling. This process does not work on Asian, Caucasian, or Indian hair as the hair will be thinned out by the chemicals but still stay curly. Instead, another technique is used: Japanese hair straightening (aka thermal reconditioning) and is much more expensive. Results are permanent (not for the new growth, of course) and heat styling is usually not necessary unless your hair is naturally very curly. Retouches every 6 to 9 months depending on your hair's rate of growth. Damage to hair can be substantial if the process is not done correctly or if post-treatment care is not sufficient. Scrunching will most probably not work after the straightening process unless rollers/curling tongs and mousse is used.

Why don't you try japanese straightning. Go to chinatown in your area or a chinese salon and they will have it available for $100-$250. Trust me it works! I've had it done and it's been five years and my hair is still straight!
