Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

I have horrible unruly, curly hair. It looks pretty sometimes when I pull it back into a bun and let the curls rest on top of my head. And I've never had a problem with doing a quick curly updo.

In order to make it look decent from day to day I use GLOBS and globs of products (varying from Aveda, Paul Mitchell, Sebastian, KMS, and Pureology). This makes my curls somewhat "nice" looking if I leave my hair down, but usually throughout the day I find myself reapplying products!!

So, I've been straightening my hair a lot by blowdrying and flat ironing it every other day for almost a full year now. And my question to all of you is...what is more damaging?

Is it more damaging to flat iron all the time? (and still use products for straightening)?

Or is it more damaging to get your hair chemically straightened every 6 months and hardly use any products in your hair and no blowdrying / ironing heat?

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

You are doing more damage using the flat iron. Too much heat is damaging to your hair.

However, if you protect your hair using thermal dressing products prior to applying heat, you should be okay. If you want to keep your hair natural, there are products that you can use to stop the frizz.

But, if you decide to use the chemicals, you can texturize your hair. By texturizing, you will losen the curl, and have the option of going curly or straight. You can also purchase a relaxer that has more "natural" ingredients, but a relaxer is still a relaxer. There are plenty of relaxers that actually IMPROVE your hair. If you don't maintain a relaxer, that is how the majority of the damage occurs

both are very damaging. try just brushing and letting it dry

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

the chemicals are worse

i blow dry and straigthen everyday....i have ugly curls

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

hmm i would suggest straitening it with a flat iron becasue chemicals are bad for you hair and can make it fall out

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

both are really damaging but the chemical japanese therapy is much worse

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

i'd say flat iron 'cause then you can go back to your natural hair. it shouldn't take mor ethan 10 minutes if you take your time. chemical can damage your hair just like dying it.

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

i have similar hair like u. and i am gonna japanese straighten it. its been proven that it is really really healthy for ure hair. much more healthier than regular straighteners. here is a website all about the japanese straightening.

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

A flat Iron can cause serious heat-damage to your hair if you use it daily. It causes hair, over time, to become so barely burnt its hardly noticeable, but, if your hair is longer, that makes it brittle...which causes breakage, and higher occurrence of split ends...

...which causes your curls to actually become MORE frizzy.

A chemical straightening, if you make sure to pamper your hair ((deep conditioning, light, light brushing, mayhap an oil treatmeant)) afterwards, and go to a trained professional stylist, can be MUCH more healthy.

Also, start letting your hair dry naturally, if its at all possible.

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

its more damaging to straighten and blow dry your hair everyday... get a relaxer its much more healthy for your hair and it will SOO much more convenient for you.. but if you do choose to get a relaxer you still need to take good care of your hair so it doesn't break... if money is that big issue for in addition to getting ur hair chemically straightened every 6 months u should go to the salon at lease once every 2 week for a wash and set with treatment.

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

You should get it chemically straightened but have your hair stylist do it. It takes away the time you take straightening your hair in the morning and it leaves your hair silky and shiney if done properly.

Both of these are very damaging. There is a product called (Maxi glide) don't mark my words on how is it called. But it works I have it. Here is the website:

GOOD LUCK!

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

i'm a hairstylist and the choices you have given are not realistic.

Both will damage your hair.

my advice, take it or leave it, would be to use irons when you want it straight but when you do have it straight, use straightening balm and defrizz serum the rest of the time, you should tie it back or let it dry on its own.

Flat Iron vs. Chemical Straightening?

If you chemically straight you hair you will Still need to blow dry your hair ... but could not paint your hair nor make tips nor NOTHINK gor more than 2 years, cuz you could dammage your hair so bad you could losse it. I think is better to blow dry your hair the iron it (only with the iron made with ions!) and not do it all the time, you have to give your hair some rest...... dont use any gel it will damage your hair.. (a week blow dry ur hair and the other leave it natural, it is better for your hair)

good luck

i have the same problem. i chose not to get a relaxer because i still want my natural hair sometimes. straightening your hair everyday breaks your hair off. first you start to get split and dead ends then they breakoff. but getting a relaxer can thin out your hair and your hair will never be the same after even if you try to grow your natural hair out. also a relaxer or getting it chemically straighted has a lot of things that you have to look out for. an example would be putting too many chemicals in your hair like getting a relaxer then getting your hair dyed might cause it to fall out or break off. what i did was get a texturizer. its still chemicals but it not as bad. the first one i got was called JUST FOR ME TEXTURIZER. then the second time i switched to SOFT AND BEAUTIFUL BOTANICALS TEXTURIZER. the texturizer doesnt straighten your hair it just loosens up the curls and softens up the hair to make it easier to straighten or just wear it down curly. i had corse, some might say slave hair.lol but it made my hair curly so i could wear it down. and it doesnt take a lot to straighten it so i dont have to straighten it everyday.
