Do you have to use a heat protectant when straightening hair?

I mean, can you just use a leave in conditioner (Garnier Sleek %26amp; Shine) to protect your hair from damage? Or do you need an actual heat protectant. Will leave in conditioner protect your hair well? I straighten my hair a lot, but it gets oily from heat protectants ]:

it's best to use one because it's specifically for heat on your hair. but it's no big deal not to. i know what you mean with the oily part, i used to have that same prob but now i use this stuff called matrix varoom gold heat iron-in control. it goes on practically dry %26amp; i got it from my local salon...love it. good luck =)

If your hair is thin, I would suggest it, but my hair is SO thin and I don't. If your hair is thick then no you dont have to use it but yes leave in conditioner would work.

i have been straightening my hair for 4 years and it has SO many split ends its CRAzyy. so if you want a head full of split ends go ahead. i have tried heat protectants but they only leave it oily or greasy or gross. my stylist deffinately recomends it to me all the time and she says if i dont protect it i wont have hair when im 30. BUT i don't see the big deal. if you want like shampoo-comercial gorgeous hair definately but it doesn't do anything really

hope i helped (:

hmm. well. the conditioner helps make it not so frizzy. the heat protectant just helps not to damage your hair from the heat.
